Adult Education


Adult Education

St. Johns River State College offers adult education classes throughout Putnam County for students who wish to improve their basic educational skills and/or prepare to earn a Florida High School Diploma through the General Educational Development (GED) program. Students must be 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in a public school system. Programs offered include:

  • Adult Basic Education (ABE)
  • General Educational Development (GED)
  • Career Link (Career Pathways for Adult Education)
  • Integrated Education and Training (IET)

The Adult Education program provides a supportive environment for students who wish to improve their educational skills in order to enter a college or vocational program. The program consists of:

  • Open entry enrollment
  • Instructor-led, self-paced, and computer-aided instruction
  • Online instruction
  • Free use of textbooks and handouts
  • Dedicated, caring, and qualified instructors

Courses are offered both during the day and in the evenings year-round at SJR State’s Palatka Campus and during the mornings at off-campus sites in Interlachen and Crescent City. In addition, courses are offered online for students who have technology and internet accessibility. The GED Exam is offered regularly on the College’s Palatka Campus.

Students who have been suspended or expelled from their high school will need to submit an admissions petition to be accepted into the Adult Education Department.

Any student who misses 30 consecutive calendar days will be withdrawn from their Adult Education courses and will be allowed to continue in the program the following semester. In an event of extenuating circumstances, a student may petition to remain in the program for the semester, but will be registered in new course sections, in order to comply with rule 6A-10.0381.

Careerlink (Career Pathways for Adult Education)

St. Johns River State College also offers an eligible career pathway program designed for adult education students who wish to pursue both their GED as well as begin study towards an associate degree or a certificate. More information about this limited access program, including admissions requirements, may be found on Admissions and Registration .

The program will work closely with individual students to find funding to cover program expenses. If a student wishes to receive federal financial aid while pursuing this program, the student will need to document their Ability to Benefit from the program (ATB) by passing one of the approved Federal ATB Tests. These student may choose any of the following tests, which include:

  • Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) Verbal Forms VS-1 and VS-2, Quantitative Forms QS-1 and QS-2. These tests may be taken online or in paper format. Passing scores are Verbal 200, Quantitative 210.
  • Spanish Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) Verbal Forms VS-1 and VS-2, Quantitative Forms QS-1 and QS-2. These tests may be taken online or in paper format. Passing scores are Verbal 200, Quantitative 200.
  • Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) Forms 1 and 2. Passing scores are CELSA Form 1: 97, Form 2: 97.
  • ACCUPLACER (Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, and Arithmetic). Passing Scores are Reading Comprehension 55, Sentence Skills 60, and Arithmetic 34.

Otherwise, once the student successfully completes either the GED as part of the academic program or six college level credits under this program, the student will then be eligible for federal financial assistance.

Integrated Education Training (IET)

St. Johns River State College offers two Integrated Education Training (IET) programs for adult education students who wish to pursue both their GED and an industry recognized certification. Integrated Education and Training is the teaching of adult literacy activities, workforce preparation activities, and workforce training simultaneously through relevant workplace materials. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to take both their GED exam as well as their industry credential assessment (Microsoft Specialist or Paraprofessional).

ABE/GED Integrated Education and Training (IET) Microsoft Office Specialist
This program is offered in person or online.
Palatka Campus, Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This program develops fundamental mathematics, reading, writing, language, science and social studies skills along with the basics of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Employability skills and 21st century skills, such as resume writing, interview preparation and problem solving will also be covered. Students will learn adult basic literacy skills using authentic materials, such as drafting letters and emails in Microsoft Word, creating formulas and analyzing data in Excel, and creating and delivering presentations using PowerPoint. This course will make use of industry relevant materials and contain hands-on workplace practicums.

  • Students must have a National Reporting Score (NRS) of 4 or higher in either Reading or Mathematics.
  • This course does not earn college credit.

ABE/GED Integrated Education and Training (IET) Paraprofessional
This program is offered in person or online.
Palatka Campus, Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This program develops fundamental mathematics, reading, writing, language, science and social studies skills along with the principles of effective teaching and learning, ability to apply basic instructional strategies to support students with diverse needs and demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills. Topics including instruction in supporting a positive classroom culture, leading small group or 1-on-1 text based instruction, supporting students in math, employability skills and 21st century skills, such as resume writing, interview preparation and problem solving will also be covered. Students will learn adult basic literacy skills using authentic materials and scenarios students may encounter in a classroom. This course will make use of industry relevant materials and contain hands-on workplace practicums.

  • Students must have a National Reporting Score (NRS) of 4 or higher in either Reading or Mathematics.
  • This course does not earn college credit.

The two Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs will function as a bridge to employment for students, supporting them in pursuit of both their GED, as well as an industry recognized credential. The addition of the IET program is in direct response to the skills gap in the current local workforce. These specific credentials, along with a GED, will equip graduates with unique transferable skills and ensure they are qualified to take on a variety of roles in both office and educational settings upon completion. Students will work towards their GED through practical and workplace related materials and activities to ensure once they receive their GED and credential, they are able to find employment more easily.
